This is the coolest website dealing with using music to teach students with disabilities. If I was teaching special needs or a mother of a special needs students I would use this webstie. Check it out!

I know none of us are currently planning on being a "music" teacher specifically but a friend of mine is involved with the music program through Yamaha Music and I looked it up to find out more information. It is interesting. He plays the keyboards for Tim McGraw and he goes to schools on ocassion promoting the Yamaha products. I have seen this at a couple of schools in Paducah and it is very interesting. It is basically a class set of keyboards and then a teacher keyboard where the teacher can hear what the students are playing, etc. This system can be purchased by the PTO/PTA of the school if the school district itself doesn't make room in the budget for it.

Just a note here. The MIE piano labs are really something else! Several schools in Kentucky use these with outstanding results. The teacher has to be trained in the use, but then the students really benefit. Graves County Schools has a very well established program - or at least they did as of last year. Brenda Gardner (sp?) is/was the teacher for them, but they had her doing art and music. I'm not sure what's up now though. Brenda was in some of my classes at Murray and showed and told me a lot about the MIE program. I'm very interested, but my school doesn't have the budget to allow something like that at this time. There has been documentation that students working in these labs do better not only in music, but in other studies as well. This is a good way for students to be able to create music, not just produce it from someone else's creation. (Like we did when I was a kid!)

Math and Music: Fibonacci Sequence

Students discover the patterns in music that relate to the Fibonacci Sequence. This lesson plan would be for older students. I think they would like this. It really gets them thinking!

I went under the instrument section of this website. It gave various CDs that you could listen to clips of and order. These CDs were in Chinese and English. It also showed some very interesting instruments in various shapes that were promoted by Bob from Sesame Street.

http://www.musicbulletinboards.net/history.htm

This is a website about differnet music history bulletin boards. I love when kids research something like music history and then display their findings on their own bulletin board. I also encourage everyone when teaching to let the kids do their own bulletin board. The only guidance I would give is to make sure the required items are present. Assign kids to organize etc. But it's so much more real to kids and they take ownership of their learning when they actually create the board instead of the teacher doing it for them. It may look a little more messy than you may like but the kids made it and they will love it. It's also a way to assign roles and teach them to work in groups and plan and have different kids be the leaders.

This site has a CD called Greg & Steve's Volume 2 CD. It contains songs that encourage physical activity so the kids are burning energy and using fine/gross motor skills. It has a great selection of songs including "Going on a Bear Hunt".

This is a page from its mother site that talks about a book called "Keeping Mozart in Mind." I might be able to get this book to bring to class. I read it out of boardom a few weeks ago at the WBH library.
